Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
