Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
