Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
