An extensive 60-day cruise through the Australian Coast was terminated days after the death of an older woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the party for a rest. The vessel departed without her and returned several hours later after the crew realised the lady was not present.

A large-scale search operation discovered her person the next day.

Authorities are looking into the incident, together with investigators and the state coroner.

Head of the shipping company announced that guests and staff on the ship were informed that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and previous engine troubles".

In a statement, he added that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the travelers via private aircraft".

Authorities also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the liner.
